STOP AMAIGBO ELECTION NOW OR FACE A CRISIS, UZODIMMA WARNED

A looming leadership dispute in Amaigbo, a prominent community in Imo State, is raising serious concerns about a potential outbreak of unrest if the state government does not urgently intervene to halt a controversial town union election scheduled for April 6.

Concerned stakeholders within the Amaigbo Town Union (ATU) have called on the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, to immediately suspend the planned election, warning that allowing the process to proceed under the current circumstances could trigger a major crisis in the community.

At the center of the controversy is the allegation that the outgoing president of the Union, Sir Jonathan Fyne Madumere whose tenure reportedly expired in 2025, is attempting to organize and conduct the election despite no longer having constitutional authority to do so.

Former President of AMAIGBO TOWN UNION

According to the Constitution of Amaigbo Town Union as amended 2015, the tenure of a president who fails to conduct elections before the expiration of his mandate automatically comes to an end. In such a situation, the responsibility of managing the affairs of the Union is expected to revert to the Committee of Patrons, which is mandated to organize and supervise a fresh election for a new leadership.

Moreover, looking at the influence of the associations constitution which provides that the failure of any sitting President General of Amaigbo Town Union to conduct elections on the last day of the expiration of his tenure like Sir Jonathan Fyne Madumere who his tenure ended on 26th of October 2025 effectively ends his authority to continue administering the affairs of the union.

However, several members of the Amaigbo Town Union claim that this constitutional provision is being ignored, as the outgoing president is allegedly proceeding with plans to conduct the election himself.

Community members say this move has already begun to create tension within Amaigbo, with different factions emerging among those seeking to contest the presidency of the Union.

A stakeholder who spoke with reporters warned that the situation could escalate if urgent action is not taken.

“The constitution is very clear about what should happen when a president’s tenure expires without elections.

If this illegal process is allowed to continue, it will divide the community and could lead to serious unrest,” the stakeholder said.

The Amaigbo Town Union plays a central role in coordinating the social, cultural, and developmental affairs of the Amaigbo people. Through its leadership structure, the Union serves as the primary platform for community governance, unity, and decision-making among indigenes both at home and in the diaspora.

Observers warn that disputes over the leadership of such an influential institution can quickly destabilize communities if constitutional processes are disregarded.

The crisis is also unfolding at a sensitive political moment as Nigeria gradually approaches the 2027 Nigerian presidential election, a period when political tensions across the country are expected to increase.

Stakeholders argue that swift intervention from Governor Hope Uzodimma would prevent the dispute from escalating and reinforce the administration’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability across Imo State.

Many residents say the state government must act quickly by suspending the planned election and ensuring that any leadership transition within the Amaigbo Town Union strictly follows its constitutional provisions.

As the April 6 date approaches, Sir Jonathan Fyne Madumere actions are already causing tension which would continue to grow within Amaigbo, with community and its members are hoping that the Hope Uzordimma authority would intervene before the dispute turns into a full-blown crisis capable of threatening peace in Imo State as a whole.
