LABOUR PARTY NEC SACKS NENADI USMAN AS ACTING NATIONAL CHAIRMAN

The crisis rocking the Labour Party took a dramatic turn on Tuesday as the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party announced the dissolution of the caretaker committee led by Esther Nenadi Usman.

In a press release issued after a virtual NEC meeting held on March 17, 2026, the council declared that the caretaker committee had caused what it described as “incalculable damage” to the party since its formation.

The statement, signed by Alhaji Abdulrahim Imam Chindo, Secretary of the NEC Forum, confirmed that the party’s NEC resolved to immediately dissolve the caretaker committee and reaffirm its confidence in the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Julius Abure.

According to the statement, the NEC meeting was attended by duly elected state chairmen and secretaries who emerged during the party’s December 6, 2025 elections, alongside other prominent party members.

Confidence in Abure Leadership

The NEC reiterated that it recognizes the leadership of Barrister Julius Abure as the legitimate national chairman of the party, noting that his leadership was elected during the party’s national convention held on March 27, 2024 and later reaffirmed by a NEC meeting on November 28, 2025, which was monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Party leaders stressed that the decision was necessary to stabilize the party and restore internal order following months of leadership disputes.

NEC Orders Appeal Against Court Judgment

The NEC also mandated Julius Abure and the party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, to pursue an appeal at the Court of Appeal seeking to overturn the judgment delivered on January 21, 2026 by Peter Lifu.

The court ruling had earlier contributed to the ongoing leadership controversy within the party.

Preparations for 2027 Elections

In another major resolution, the NEC directed Abure and the party’s national secretary to issue the necessary notices to the Independent National Electoral Commission for the conduct of primaries ahead of the 2027 Nigerian General Election, once the Federal High Court judgment is set aside.

The NEC further nullified all notices previously issued to INEC by the dissolved caretaker committee led by Nenadi Usman.

Party Crisis Deepens

The latest development adds a new twist to the leadership crisis that has plagued the Labour Party in recent months, with rival factions battling for control of the party structure ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political analysts say the outcome of the appeal and the party’s internal reconciliation efforts will likely determine the Labour Party’s strength going into the next general election.
